Andrew's Taipei starter guide

Taipei Recs

A few places I usually recommend to friends visiting Taipei for the first time. Mostly food, neighborhoods, easy walks, and a couple classic tourist things that are still worth doing.

Best first day

Easy, classic, and not too clever. Good when someone lands with energy.

  1. Yongkang Start around Dongmen for food, dessert, and easy side-street wandering.
  2. CKS Memorial Hall A quick landmark stop nearby. Big plaza, easy photos, low planning.
  3. Taipei 101 / Xinyi Head to the landmark, get a Din Tai Fung number if you want dinner, then wander the malls while waiting.
  4. Raohe Night Market End with a straightforward first night market. Pepper bun near the temple entrance.

Rainy day

Keeps things flexible and mostly indoors, with the Din Tai Fung wait turned into useful wandering time.

  1. Zhongshan Start with shops, cafes, and small boutiques while the weather decides what it is doing.
  2. Taipei 101 mall Move indoors to Xinyi. Easy food, bookstore/mall wandering, and simple MRT access.
  3. Din Tai Fung Get a number, then use the wait to see Taipei 101 instead of standing around.

Touristy but worth it

Go when the lanterns start turning on. Accept that it will be busy.

  1. Jiufen Take Uber/taxi if you want the easy version. Arrive late afternoon for tea, snacks, views, and lanterns after dark.

First-time Taipei

Classic stops that are still worth doing once.

Ruifang, day trip

Jiufen Old Street 九份老街

Tourist-heavy, but still magical for a first Taiwan trip. Lanterns, stairs, tea houses, mountain and ocean views. Best late afternoon into evening. It is outside Taipei city, but close enough to include.

Uber/taxi Easiest from Taipei, especially with 2-4 people. Transit option: TRA to Ruifang, then bus or taxi up to Jiufen.

Xinyi

Taipei 101 台北101 / Xinyi 信義

The obvious landmark, but still fun if it is your first time. Good to combine with food, a mall break, or wandering around Xinyi.

Tip If you want Din Tai Fung, get a number first, then do the touristy 101 stuff while you wait. If you do not care about the observatory or tuned mass damper, Simple Kaffa Sola on 88F is a lower-commitment way to get high up in the building.

MRT Red Line Taipei 101 / World Trade Center. Blue Line to Taipei City Hall also works for a Xinyi walk.

Elephant Mountain 象山

Short but sweaty stairs, classic Taipei 101 view. Best around sunset if the weather is clear.

MRT Red Line Xiangshan, then follow signs to the trail stairs.

MRT Brown Line Taipei Zoo, then walk to the Maokong Gondola station.

Getting around

Small practical things that make Taipei easier.

Across Taipei

EasyCard 悠遊卡

The easiest transit card for Taipei. Use it for MRT, buses, Maokong Gondola, convenience stores, and lots of small payments.

Tip Buy and top up at MRT stations, 7-Eleven, FamilyMart, and other convenience stores. Convenience stores often have more fun designs if you want a cute one instead of the plain MRT-station card.

YouBike U-Bike

Taipei's shared bikes are great and cheap for short hops, riverside rides, or connecting between MRT stops and neighborhoods.

Tip Visitor setup: download the YouBike 2.0 app. Easiest is to register with a phone number, passport number for insurance, and payment method, then scan the bike QR code. You can also do single-ride rental with Visa, Mastercard, or JCB, but it uses a temporary card authorization/deposit. To return, push the bike fully into any YouBike 2.0 dock and wait for the return-success message.

Uber

Uber is usually cheap in Taipei and easier than cabs if you do not speak Chinese. Especially useful late at night, in the rain, or for places that are awkward from the MRT.
